An hour-long episode that feels like a movie, a rollercoaster of a plot that has hundreds of mini cliffhangers, are you second-guessing everything you know about the show now? I know I am. Let’s be real here, a lot just happened so let’s try and break this down into more bite-sized chunks. We can break down the episode into three big chunks: The exposition/introduction of robotic Payton, OMG Payton actually has feelings, and then We should probably try and win this electionnnn …..
Introduction of “The Politician”
When the episode starts we see Payton Hobart, the adopted son of a wealthy Santa Monica family whose main goal in life is one thing and one thing only. BECOME THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. If you take away nothing else from this episode know that Payton and his team are extremely driven and will do just about anything to achieve their goals. The music that we do hear is similar to this; it is very steady but it is continuing to push forward. There is not a lot of difference between the background music from scene to scene. It gives the same Latin American drama vibe that the whole show captures. We continue to build through Payton debating and realizing that he is outmatched by River. After River announces that his running mate is the powerful and brilliant Skye Leighton, Payton storms over to River’s house where River promptly kills himself.
OMG Payton actually has feelings
Through the flashback, the conversations with his mother, and the song that Payton sings at River’s memorial service we get to see the raw feelings that Payton is feeling. We also see just how connected River was to Payton’s feelings. River was the only one that could really make Payton feel raw, emotional and real. It is interesting to note that the music in this section is almost non-existent paralleling the way that Payton is feeling.
We should probably try and win this electionnnn …
After Astrid announces that she will be running in the place of River, Payton and his team kick things into high gear to try and get some momentum for their campaign. They use the fake breakup of Payton and Alice to their advantage, and they bring onto the team Infinity Jackson as Payton’s running mate. Through all of this, there is just more background music further showing just how persistent Payton and his team are. The steady yet stressful theme running throughout is a brilliant touch to enhance the mood of the entire show. Then we are dropped with the Infinity might not have Cancer bomb.
